In this series of posts, how to vegetable garden I want to review the growing process of all major vegetables in your garden that you may wish to plant. Later I will return to some growing methods and habits but now let’s outline the whole process of planting and growing potatoes.

              How to grow potatoes

Potatoes can be grown in almost any variety of soil. Potatoes need sunshine and organic soil nutrients. First you should check if your vegetable garden receives about 8-hour-a-day sunshine and always try to make garden in a place where the air is not polluted with CO2 emissions. Sun and fresh air are the main factors for growing any vegetable well. The soil should be enriched with compost in the autumn to ensure ample quantity of nutrients for your potatoes. As the result your soil structure becomes better with natural organisms that make natural mineral into forms necessary for your potatoes. This organic soil structure holds water and nutrients for your potatoes provided that you have good water outfall. This soil procures your plants with needed nutrients and protects them from various diseases.

Then you should decide whether to grow Early or Maincrop potatoes. First variety provides new potatoes in summer and the second tubers during winter time storage. If you have limited space then plant Earlies but in case you have enough space then grow both varieties. Learning how to vegetable garden and especially how to grow vegetables may become boring if not started correctly. A fortnight before starting planting potatoes you should rake in your fertilizer. Do not use lime as the potatoes like 5-6 PH level not highter. Never plant your potatoes in the same soil every year. Let the soil rest from them for several seasons so that be protected from pests and various diseases. The same can be said about tomatoes planted soil do not use it for your potatoes for several seasons. Before planting potatoes place them in the warm and bright place so that they begin to sprout. A day before planting slice several big potatoes into seeds and ensure that they are up to two inches square and have some buds or “eyes”. Plant small potatoes in whole without slicing. Some days later your potatoes will become callous. This preserves them from decomposition. Your soil should be wet but not over watered. The soil temperature must exceed 45F for potatoes to begin to grow. Potatoes can endure cold weather even frost but they should be protected with straw or some appropriate material if necessary.
